Tell Me This Isn’t Happening

“Of all the moral precepts instilled in Buddhist monks the promise not to kill comes first, and the principle of non-violence is arguably more central to Buddhism than any other major religion. So why have monks been using hate speech against Muslims and joining mobs that have left dozens dead?”

I don’t remember much from history class. It was to busy being taught in a boring monotone way to make it something people might actually be interested in. Otherwise I might have recalled at some point that Buddhism has had a violent past like some other religions ( I hope to be able to look more into this tomorrow ). But I am having the hardest time wrapping my head around that instead of just peacefully protesting (like the picture above) something, they are turning to violence. Has the reporter missed something? Perhaps they’ve let someone become influential to them who shouldn’t be? If the peaceful can’t be peaceful does that mean tough times ahead are inevitable?

Bullets fired shop in Pattani province in southern Thailand killing six people, including a toddler. “All those killed were believed to be Buddhists. A note left at the scene did not identify the group behind the attack, but said it was in retaliation for the deaths of some of their fellow members.”

Don’t these two reports seem to be connected? The shooting in Thailand really seems like retaliation for the above situation. 😦

About D.Dinius

I am big on education, animals, and nature. So following that sentence I think it's important to be smart and animals and nature bring clarity and a calmness to things. I am new to actually paying attention and having opinions. This has been building well for about the last year. :)

  1. Yes they were violent many many many moons ago, and I too would have to look up dates because It’s been so long. But I am not surprised if some start to revert to violence because their world has been turned upside down for so long now and with no end in sight. I am wondering what will happen when this Dali Lama goes and a new one needs to be found? Will Tibet ever be healed and their religion, faith, belief, whatever you would like to call it, be returned? Hopefully retaliation will stop others from converting back to violence. And yes I would guess these two could be connected some how. When the world turns on Buddhism we have much to fear for the future.
